5 Vacation Rental Lessons to Learn from Christmas Carols

Wreaths, trees, and Christmas lights now decorate shop windows, offices, and many a home. As we gather with loved ones to celebrate this holiday season, what lessons can we learn from some of our favorite holiday songs?

1. It’s all about experiences

“I don’t want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don’t care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree”

Although the shopping season is underway, as you scramble through the mall finding that perfect gift, take note of what Mariah is telling us here: the best gifts are not material items, but rather the experiences we share with one another. What better gift than more time with the ones you love? You don’t need yet another package to unwrap, you need more memories to share with loved ones. Use this helpful tip when marketing your vacation rental property. Create an experience for your vacation rental guests. After all, those are the gifts that truly last.

2. And totally new kinds of experiences

“Away in a manger, no crib for a bed” (or tree house, or castle, or couch, or…)

As you move away from material items for gifts, and more into the realm of experiences, the opportunity for unique gift giving expands dramatically. With so many accommodation options available to travelers, the most memorable will be the ones that leave guests with new and unique experiences. Whether it be by providing extra amenities like bicycles, snowboards, kayaks, etc. or by partnering with local attractions to give your guests discounts, promise to create those valuable experiences for your guests. Get out of the mindset of the same old same old, and unlock the possibilities to the new and exciting experiences just out there waiting for you.

3. Working together is just better

“Later on we’ll conspire
As we dream by the fire”

Conspiring and collaboration bring us ever closer, especially this time of year. Share your home, and share other assets when they’re not in use. Steve Sasman of the VR Owner’s Guide, for example, rented out his car along with his property to help bring more guests to his vacation home. Not only can collaborative consumption and the Sharing Economy enrich guest experiences, they can also enrich your bank account this holiday season.

4. Make new friends

“Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more”

The collaborative consumption made possible by the Sharing Economy brings us in proximity to new people we might have never otherwise met. People with whom we can build friendships and expand our social circles. Yes, this is a time of year to get even closer to those whom you already know and love, but it is also a time to meet new people that you may get to know and love in the future.

Use this advice to build your network of guests by creating personal and genuine relationships with each one. Not only will your guests have a better time with a host they can trust and love, they will also be more likely to recommend your property and more likely to become loyal, repeat customers.

5. Live more, spend less

“There’s a happy feeling nothing in the world can buy
When they pass around the coffee and the pumpkin pie”

We all know you can’t buy happiness. That being said, you can certainly share it. So this holiday season and beyond, let’s all commit to sharing more. Let’s share experiences, share friendship, and share happiness.

And if despite the above, you find yourself overwhelmed with holiday shopping, please just remember there is a better way. Take a deep breath, and…

Relax. It’s rented.
